Will Ice Cream Help Heartburn?

Ice cream will not relieve heartburn. In fact, it might exacerbate the situation.

Heartburn is characterized by a burning sensation in the chest caused by stomach acid backing up into the esophagus. When the lower esophageal sphincter (LES), a muscle that controls the aperture between the stomach and the esophagus, relaxes too much, this can happen.

Ice cream is a high-fat food, and high-fat foods can relax the LES. This means that eating ice cream can increase the likelihood of stomach acid backing up into the esophagus, causing heartburn.

Furthermore, the coldness of ice cream might dull the pain receptors in the chest. This can make it difficult to discern if you have heartburn, leading to you eating more ice cream and exacerbating the condition.

If you have heartburn, you should avoid eating ice cream. If you must have ice cream, consume it in moderation and avoid eating it too close to sleep time.

Other foods that can cause heartburn include:

Fattening foods

Foods that are spicy

Fruits of citrus

Chocolate Coffee

Alcohol

Carbonated beverages

If you have frequent heartburn, you should consult your doctor. There are drugs available to assist treat and prevent heartburn.
